How to avoid dehydration
Dehydration is no joke
Staying hydrated on a hike starts long before you reach the trailhead. Drink water beforehand, then sip regularly as you walk rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Carry enough water for the full route—at least half a liter per hour in moderate weather, and more in heat or steep terrain. If you sweat heavily, include electrolytes to replace lost salts. Take breaks in the shade, eat water-rich snacks like fruit, and pay attention to early signs of dehydration such as headache, dizziness, or dark urine. A steady pace and smart planning keep both your energy and hydration levels stable.
